Up

Inspired by the animated film Up, moonhouse #2.8 rised approximately 400 meters on a helium-driven vehicle. The launch took place on a bright swedish summer evening at ”Vretbo Space Center” near Västerås.

The craft was tethered to a fishing line, but getting it back was hard. Winds and trees made the moonhouse get stuck. With the help of arrows, neighbours and an airgun it was possible to retrieve the payload.

Moonhouse #2.8 will continue its adventures.

This report from the Independence Day Expedition reaches us from Mike Morrison in the USA:

Last week the Crimson Tide house accompanied me and my wife to Gulf Shores, AL to celebrate the 4th of July. For the US this date represents our independence from Great Britain. Normally we have huge fireworks displays along with plenty to eat and drink, however this year Mother Nature did not play along:) So no pictures with fireworks unfortunately.
Image 5907 was taken on a dock looking out over Bon Secour Bay on July 2nd, the crane in the background would not come into focus.
Image 5913 is of the house floating on a lily pad in the lagoon on July 3rd.

Images 5950, 5963, and 5964 were taken on July 3rd at Fort Morgan, possibly the southern most point of the state of Alabama. This fort has been used in many of our nation’s domestic conflicts (a polite way of saying many cannons were fired from this place 🙂
Image 5986 was taken on July 5th at a place called Lulu’s. She is the sister of singer Jimmy Buffett. No margaritas for the house but plenty of fried okra and pot roast quesadilla and beer, obviously.

Here at HQ we particularly appreciate the picture with the Moonhouse together with the United States Flag. It stimulates thoughts on a level words are incapable of. It is art. Moonhouse belongs everywhere, everywhen, to everyone and to none.

Congratulations Mike to your novel and successful expedition and the beautiful imagery and thank you for highlighting this valuable aspect. Fair winds on your coming adventures.

Fredrik Zeybrandt brought Moonhouse #2.4 on an expedition to further explore the sport of tennis. This time the house lends some of its fame to Mats Wilander, the player in black in the images. Mats Wilander was ranke 1 in the world for twenty weeks and is considered to be one of the three best Swedish tennis players of all time together with Björn Borg and Stefan Edberg.

Congratulations Fredrik on your successful expedition and fair winds for your coming expeditions.

Update: Fredrik points out that Mats was playing against Mikael Pernfors and Thomas Enquist at the time. Naturally, Mikael and Thomas are also welcome to bask in the fame of the expedition. :).

Moonhouse #2.14 has been on an exotic expedition exploring different aspects of space weather. At the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) the house has explored the conditions in the Magnetosphere (image above). The solar wind (below) and the weather at FMI itself. The Magnetosphere is as the reader is certainly aware of the region in space cloest to Earth where the magnetic field is dominated by the Earth magnetic field. There are other magnetospheres in the Solar System around Jupiter and around the Sun itself to mention two. The electric solar sail (ESAIL) is a novel technology for interplanetary transport that is successfully promoted by FMI. ESAIL relies on borrowing impulse from the Solar wind to propel a space system without carrying reaction mass on board. in the lower of the two images the house explores the outdoor environment at FMI in Helsinki where Moonhouse HQ has first hand experience of the harshness of the weather conditions that can prevail.

Congratulations Sini on your successful expedition. We wish you fair winds on your coming expeditions.

These vibrant pictures by Nils von Matérn reached Expedition HQ yseterday. The pictures are from Nils’ expedition to Nyborg, Denmark. Nyborg lies att the bridge head of Stora Bältbron and was, until the bridge was built, an important Danih port. While transportation is still important it seems more pleasant to visit Nyborg for some R&R on the beach.

Thank you Nils for the beautiful images. We look forward to more reports from your expediton over seas if we may be so privileged.

Fair winds!

Kilimanjaro Summit, Wilfred Moshi July 5, 2013

Earlier today Wilfred Moshi and Moonhouse #2.27 reached the summit of Kilimanjaro. Read more at the Kili-treks website.

This successful expedition meets the first challenge in the Moonhouse Expeditions ”The Summits Challenge” where the goal is to mount expeditions to the highest peaks of the seven continents. It also earns Wilfred a place in the Moonhouse Explorers hall of fame.

Congratulations Wilfred and three teachers from Edinburgh on your successful expedition. We wish you fair winds for your coming adventures.

PS. Wilfred has promised us an expedition report when he is rested. DS

Kilimanjaro Expedition

Latest news (yesterday) is that an attempt for the summit will be made today. This was the message of a Twitter message that HQ received last night from @WilfredMoshi leading the @kilitreks expedition up the mountain in Tanzania.

We’re @ a place called Barranco 3890m and tomorrow we’ll go to the base camp ready to attempt the summit.

Follow the expedition and trek at the kili-trek home page.

We wish Wilfred and the expedition fair winds all the way to the summit! (Fair winds, in this case, would mean no winds).

Moonhouse #2.9 -. The Budapest is now in Sweden. Explorer Carl Nordlund brought it along from Budapest and seized the opportunity to document the journey en route from Budapest to Stockholm. This is possibly the first documented expedition on thin air.

Congratulations Carl your successful expedtion and fair winds for your and Moonhouse #2.9’s coming adventures.

These lovely images of moonhouse #2.4 by our newest explorer, Nils von Matérn, reach us from the Swedish beach resort (they do exist) of Tylösand. The images really capture the essence of Tylösand, warm and relaxing days in the sun followed by after beach activities in a piano bar or in a similar establishment.

Congratulations Nils on your successful expedition and fair winds for your coming adventures.
