Kilimanjaro Expedition

Latest news (yesterday) is that an attempt for the summit will be made today. This was the message of a Twitter message that HQ received last night from @WilfredMoshi leading the @kilitreks expedition up the mountain in Tanzania.

We’re @ a place called Barranco 3890m and tomorrow we’ll go to the base camp ready to attempt the summit.

Follow the expedition and trek at the kili-trek home page.

We wish Wilfred and the expedition fair winds all the way to the summit! (Fair winds, in this case, would mean no winds).

These lovely images of moonhouse #2.4 by our newest explorer, Nils von Matérn, reach us from the Swedish beach resort (they do exist) of Tylösand. The images really capture the essence of Tylösand, warm and relaxing days in the sun followed by after beach activities in a piano bar or in a similar establishment.

Congratulations Nils on your successful expedition and fair winds for your coming adventures.

California Road Trip – Bixby Creek Bridge

Bixby Creek Bridge.
Daniel Ahlberg. June 30, 2013

As the fifth installment on reports the Californian road trio that Daniel Ahlberg and his family is making, we get a report from Bixby Creek Bridge. Daniel writes about the bridge:

The bridge lies 200 km south of San Fransisco at Big Sur on Hwy1 where it crosses Bixby Creek. It was built in 1932, is 218 m long and 85 m high. It is renound for having featured in many movies and automobile advertisments. This due to its beautiful architecture and naturally the glorious surroundings. An average 4500 cars per day pass the bridge.

With the history on this trip we have almost come to expect records and the Bixby Creek Bridge does not disappoint us. Wikipedia informs us that when the bridge was built in 1932 it featured the longest concrete arch span in the world with its 98 m and even more importantly, it was build to a cost under budget!

Earlier reports from the road trip can be found here, here, here and here. We hope for continued fair winds on your expedition and look forward to more exciting reports.

Californian Road Trip – Yosemite Falls

Yosemity Falls, CA, USA. Daniel Ahlberg. June 22, 2013

From their Californian Road Trip, Daniel Ahlberg and family sends us this beautiful picture from Yosemite Falls(earlier reports here, here and here). Yosemite Falls apprears to be one of the worlds more impressive natural fenomena as it is the sixth (or seventh) highest water fall in the world and the highest in North America.

This road trip is turning out to an expedition of records featuring the hottest place on Earth, the tree with the largest volume on Earth and the highest water fall in North America.

Thank you for the beautiful image. We wish you fair winds on your ongoing expedition Daniel and family and look forward to your next report, record or not. 🙂

Californian Road Trip – Death Valley

Death Valley, CA. USA. Daniel Ahlberg, June 24, 2013

Bad Water, Death Valley admittedly doesn’t seem like the best place to spend a lot of time. But seeing it once makes a lot of sense. You could argue that this is as bad as it gets. As Daniel Ahlberg and family ventures to this hot pot on their road trip through California USA (earlier reports here and here) he reports of temperatures above 40 degress Celcius when the expedition ventured through the place that has the record for the highest air temperature on Earth. (The record could be broken within just a few days as the current heat wave progresses).

Thank you for the beautiful pictures Daniel. They really convey an arid and uninviting feeling about the place. In fact, is much as one could imagine what it will be like for the house when on the moon. Hot and colourless. The main difference on the moon will be the lack of visitors, at least to begin with and the absence of air and, hence of a blue sky.

We wish you fair winds and look forward to more reports from your road trip.

Californian Road Trip – Sequoia National Park

Sequoia National Park, CA. USA. Daniel Ahlberg, June 22, 2013

An update from the Alberg family road trip (earlier report here) through California brings us this report from Sequoia National Park. Jees, aren’t those sequoia trees big! Imagine the size of the red house one could build with logs from those trees. But who’s this general? The sequoia ranger? At HQ we always believed the Sherman was a tank but it turns out that in this instance he is a tree and the tree with the worlds largest volume. The trunk alone is estimated to have a volume of 1500 cubic meters (wikipedia) .

Thank you Daniel for the beautiful pictures of the impressive trees. We wish you fair winds for your ongoing adventure and look forward to more reports from your road trip.
